Choco Almond Koufetta

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I was never a fan of koufettes. All the times I’d ever tried them at weddings or christenings I found them to be tasteless and tooth-cracking hard.

When the time came to offer some at my own wedding I was determined to get the freshest ones possible. After working some Google magic I finally found APHRODITE DELIGHTS YEROSKIPOS LTD. Unfortunately in order to get them fresh I would have to pick them up myself from the factory in Yeroskipou and while I was quite willing to make the trip down there, the days were running out.

So I went back to searching online and came across a different kind of koufetta… the choco almond dragees. Even better… try the double choco almond dragees! The almond is coated with a layer of chocolate before the sugar coating. They are soft and yummy and you will find that you need to buy an extra box of them if you are preparing the bundles yourself.

Koufetta (Jordan Almonds or Almond Dragees)

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Sugar coated almonds are taken to the church to be handed out to the guests attending the wedding once the ceremony is over. They are taken in the silver tray along with the stefana, the wedding bands and the marriage license.

Greek (Cypriot) tradition says that they should be wrapped in bundles of 3 as the odd number symbolizes the fact that the couple cannot be divided. They also symbolize the bitter-sweetness of the couple’s future life together. The almond also represents fertility and the sugar coating is traditionally white to symbolize purity. It is interesting to note that Italian tradition says that the almonds should be in bundles of 5 to represent health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

Other traditions say that the koufetta should only be offered to the single women who are attending the wedding. They are then supposed to put the koufetta under their pillow and when they go to sleep that night they will dream of the man they are going to marry.
